What's it about?

~ chapter one ~

"My good daughter — when you know you are doing the right thing, do not worry about what people say."

— page 01

Baren is a brave little girl who lives near the mountains with her father and mother, a small goat, and a playful kitten. One spring day she goes with her father to plant trees on their hillside. Some idle village boys laugh at her and try to keep her from working — but her father says, "My good daughter, when you are doing the right thing, don't worry about what people say." Every single morning, Baren waters her saplings.

Then one stormy night, heavy rain floods the valley. Everyone is frightened and runs for safety. It is Baren's trees, now tall and strong, that the villagers climb into and cling to until the danger passes. The neighbours come back to thank her with small gifts and an apology. Baren only smiles at her trees and says: "Even one tree can save people's lives."
